No. 62 Cougars Fall at Arizona, 5-2

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona Wildcats captured four singles matches to clinch a 5-2 victory over the No. 62 Washington State Cougars, Friday afternoon at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. With the loss the Cougars fall to 17-5 overall, 2-4 in Pac-12 play, while the Wildcats improve to 12-8, 1-5 in Pac-12 action.
Doubles play began the day with Arizona clinching the opening point. At No. 2, Lize Leenknecht and Trang Huynh were first off after a 6-3 win over Inge Hendrikx and Samantha Czarniak. Camila Wesbrooks and Devin Chypyha posted a 6-3 victory over Maria Biryukova and Aneta Miksovska at No. 3, while Lauren Marker and Shayne Austin, ranked No. 53 nationally, sealed the point with an 7-5 win over Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic at the No. 1 position.
In singles action, Arizona wasted little time extending its lead. At No. 3 Chypyha had little trouble with Michalkova, winning 6-2, 6-1, while Marker, ranked No. 39 nationally, posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bashota at No. 1. The Wildcats then clinched the team victory when Austin defeated Biryukova in three-sets, at No. 2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Washington State got on the board when Leenknecht battled back from dropping her first set, posting a three-set 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sophia Thomas at No. 6, while Miksovska followed her lead by defeating Czarniak 7-6, 6-4, at No. 5. Trang Huynh fell to Wesbrooks after a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 loss to close out the match.
Washington State returns to the court Saturday afternoon when it faces No. 26 Arizona State in Tempe. Match time is set for noon.
