No. 73 Cougars Fall at No. 55 Washington, 4-1

SEATTLE – No. 73 Washington State captured the opening doubles point but came up short as No. 55 Washington captured a 4-1 victory over the Cougars, Friday afternoon at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The match marked the final Pac-12 regular season competition for both teams, as the Cougars fell to 17-9, 2-8 in Pac-12 play, while Washington improved to 13-10, 4-6 in Pac-12 action.
Doubles action began the day as the Cougars captured two matches to take the opening point. At No. 1, Miki Kobayashi and Nour Abbes, ranked No. 33 nationally, defeated Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic, 6-1. At No. 2, the WSU duo of Lize Leenknecht and Trang Huynh easily defeated Elianne Douglas-Miron and Stacey Fung, 6-2. Washington State clinched the match at the No. 3 position when Maria Biryukova and Aneta Miksovska came away with a solid 6-3 win over Kenadi Hance and Tami Grende, earning the Cougars the 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the Huskies clinched the match with four-straight victories. At No. 3, Douglas-Miron was off first defeating Barbora Michalkova, 6-4, 6-1, while Nour Abbes, ranked No. 115 nationally, overcame Biryukova with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 decision, at No. 2 singles. At the No. 6 position, Leenknecht fell to Kobayashi in a straight-set 7-6, 6-3 result. At No. 4, Sophia Bott posted a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Huynh, clinching the match for UW.
Two matches were halted once the team outcome was decided. At No. 1, Bashota was leading Fung, 7-5, 4-6, 2-1, while Miksovska was even with Hance at No. 5, 7-6 (2), 0-6.
The Cougars are next in action at the Pac-12 Championships, April 20-24 in Ojai, Calif.
