Cougars Blow Past Idaho

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team won its second match of the day with a 7-0 victory against Idaho, Friday at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
Beginning with doubles play, the No. 2 pair of Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh defeated Ana Batiri and Lucia Badillos, 6-1, while Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova outdueled Marianna Petrei and Celine Koets 6-2 at No. 3 to clinch the point. The No.1 duo of Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht led Belen Barcenilla and Maria Tavares, 5-3, when the match was stopped.
In singles action, No. 2 Biryukova put WSU up 2-0 by defeating Tavares in two sets 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, Michalkova followed her lead, outdueling Batiri with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 victory.
At No.3, Huynh clinched the match for the Cougars with a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4, win over Barcenilla. Bashota, at No. 1, kept the Cougars hot streak alive by defeating Petrei 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4.
Leenknecht defeated Koets in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6, while Miksovska finished the day off strong by defeating Badillos 4-6, 7-5, 10-2, completing the Cougars sweep.
The Cougars return to the court Saturday Jan. 23, at 11:00 a.m., to face Montana, and again at 5 p.m., taking on Eastern Washington.
