WSU Starts Strong at Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's tennis team had an impressive first day at the 2015 Cougar Classic Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In the doubles flight, WSU's Barbora Michalkova and Victoria Matejevic began play with a resounding victory over the Lewis-Clark State College pair of Kianna Arthur and Katelyn Smedley, 6-1. The duo then posted a victory over Montana State's duo of Naomi Holopainen and Molly Crum, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Trang Huynh and Aneta Miksovska continued the Cougars strong showing by defeating Montana's Lidia Dukic and Montana State's Shelby Cerkovnik, 6-2. The duo then advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Gonzaga's Graciela Rosas and Alex Bourguignon, 6-4. Cougar teammates Lize Leenknecht and Donika Bashota advanced to the second round after posting a tough first-round victory over Montana State's Linda Vick and Angelina Philippova, 6-4.
Washington State dominated in the singles flight as Biryukova, Huynh and Bashota all swept their respective opponents. Biryukova posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Montana's Anna Carbo and a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Gonzaga's Sam Polayes, in the second round. Huyhn easily advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Montana State's Shelby Cerkovnik and 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Sissi Koehler of Gonzaga.
Bashota defeated Gonzaga's Domonique Garley, 6-1, 6-3 and Montana's Francis Dean, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals. Michalkova won her first match defeating Montana's Lidia Dukic, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and won her next match 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 against Gonzaga's Rosas.
Monahan started the day strong with a win over LCSC's Deanri Human, 7-6, 6-1, and fell in the next round 6-1, 6-4 against Gonzaga's Sophie Whittle. Aneta Miksovska cruised to a victory in her first match over LCSC's Stephanie Buckingham, 6-1, 6-0 and lost her second match against Hannah Sulz, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Cougars continue play Saturday at the Cougar Classic with matches starting at 9 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
