Pistorese Masterful in 4-0 Shutout of No. 12 Cal
April 04, 2015 | Baseball
Pistorese was masterful throughout the game as he threw his third complete game of the season, and first shutout, allowing four hits while striking out six with just one walk as he improved to 4-3 on the season. Pistorese's complete game shutout marked the first by a Cougar pitcher since Scott Simon accomplished the feat in a 5-0 road victory against Utah, April 7, 2013.
WSU (14-15, 3-8) exploded in the first for four runs on five hits. With two outs and nobody on, Ian Sagdal started the rally with a single to right. Following a P.J. Jones walk, Shane Matheny doubled both in to open the scoring. Tyler McDowell and Derek Chapman each followed with RBI singles for the 4-0 lead.
Freshman Derek Chapman collected three hits for the Cougars, while Sagdal had two hits and Matheny added a pair of RBI.
Cal (20-9, 7-4), managed just four hits against Pistorese, all singles. Only three players advanced past second base before being stranded. Cal was led by Chris Paul's two hits while starter Ryan Mason suffered the loss, going six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Friday's win marked the first time since the start of conference play in 2013 that the Cougars have won a road series against a Top 15 opponent. WSU opened Pac-12 play in 2013 by taking two of three at No. 14 Arizona State.
The series concludes Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
