Cougar Tennis Signs Pair to NLI

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University Head Coach Lisa Hart has signed Gizem Ates and Ege Tomey to a National Letter of Intent, it was announced Wednesday.
Ates is from Antalya, Turkey while Tomey is from Izmir, Turkey. Both plan to enroll at WSU in the fall of 2016.
“We are thrilled to have Gizem and Ege join our program and the Cougar family,” said Hart. “Having played numerous international events, both women have a strong tennis background. They both possess a tremendous work ethic and having represented their country on the Turkish National team has translated into a team-first mentality that we emphasize within our program.
“Coach Cambier and I have enjoyed getting to know Gizem and Ege throughout the recruiting process and look forward to helping both of them achieve their very best, on the court and in the classroom, as collegiate student-athletes.”
Ates led her high school to the Black Sea Region championships and finished that season second in Turkey. She has played numerous International Tennis Federation events, garnering a world ranking in doubles. She has represented Turkey's national team in all age divisions, finishing runner-up in the U16 national championship. Ates also reached a high of No. 3 in age-group rankings and been as high as 13 in Turkey's national rankings.
Tomey has led her high school to two gold medals in Turkey, while also representing Turkey's national team in U12, U14 and U16. She captured the U12 and U14 national singles and doubles titles, reached No. 39 in Tennis Europe for U14, No. 85 in U16 and No. 304 for the ITF, while also achieving a world ranking in both singles and doubles.
