Cougar Tennis Travels to ITA Northwest Regionals

THIS WEEK: The Washington State women's tennis team concludes the 2015 fall season at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals in Stanford, Calif., which is slated to run Oct. 22- 27, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: At the 2015 WSU Invitational, sophomore Donika Bashota took home the championship of the Crimson Flight by defeating No. 99 Alyssa Tobita of Oregon, 6-1, 7-6(7). Freshman Aneta Miksovska impressed at her first WSU Invitational, posting a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over teammate Lize Leenknecht, earning her the Cougar Flight singles crown. WSU's Victoria Matejevic took home the championship of the WSU Flight in an exciting match as she defeated Oregon's Micheline Aubuchon, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. In the Gray Doubles Flight, the freshman duo of Miksovska and Michalkova defeated Oregon's Daniela Nasser and Christi Woodson, 7-5, remaining undefeated in doubles play and winning the Gray Doubles Flight. In the Crimson Doubles Flight, WSU's Leenknecht and Trang Huynh won 6-0 over Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan of Oregon to win the Crimson Doubles Flight.
BASHOTA OFF TO FAST START: Donika Bashota is off to a quick start to the 2015-16 campaign. The sophomore from Lidkoping, Sweden, is 12-0 in singles play, having won the Cougar Classic, BYU Invitational and WSU Invitational titles. She has also teamed with Lize Leenknecht to win a pair of doubles titles in the Cougar Classic and BYU Invitational, posting a 7-0 record along the way.
USTA/ITA NORTHWEST REGIONALS: In addition to Washington State and host Stanford, the ITA's Northwest Region field is comprised teams from California, Cal Poly, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, UC Davis and Washington.
ITA REGIONAL DRAWS SET: Friday's action begins at 8:30 a.m. with the first two rounds of singles and the opening slate of doubles. The competition continues Saturday with two more rounds on both sides with the quarterfinals set for Sunday. Semifinals for singles and doubles are contested Monday, before the championship matches on Tuesday.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2015-16 season the Cougars will have three new faces to go with five returners. The returning roster includes seniors Maria Biryukova and Lize Leenknecht, junior Victoria Matejevic, and sophomores Holly Monahan and Donika Bashota. New to the squad this season are senior Trang Huyhn, who arrives in Pullman after transferring from Troy, and freshmen Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska.
LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Washington State finished off dual match play with a 13-12 overall record in 2015. The Cougars finished 11th in a competitive Pac-12 conference that had the top nine teams finishing with national rankings. WSU started the spring season national ranked at No. 52 and remained in the ranking through February. Departed from last year's squad is Elizaveta Luzina (26-22 singles record), number three all-time on WSU career singles victories list, and Nastia Vasyukhina (18-24).
COACH HART: Lisa Hart is in her 13th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 154 wins over her tenure, registering a 13-12 record last season. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
