The Washington State women's tennis team showed total control in defeating Colorado, 6-1, Friday morning at the Colorado South Campus Tennis Complex.
The No. 70 Cougars improve to 13-9 with the win and ended a four-match skid in conference play to improve to 2-5 in Pac-12 action. Colorado, ranked No. 75, falls to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
In doubles action, the Cougars started off slow at No. 1 as Liudmila Vasilieva and Ksenia Googe fell to Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders, 8-5. The Cougar's bounced back at No. 3 when the Cougar pairing of Lize Leenknecht and Elizaveta Luzina bested Dhany Quevedo and Mazy Watrous, 8-4.
With the doubles score tied at 1-1, the point would be decided at the No. 2 position. WSU's Andjela Kankaras defeated the Colorado duo of Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio, 8-6, to secure the doubles point for the Cougars.
In singles action, the Cougars continued to exert their dominance. At No. 3, Luzina made quick work of Quevedo, defeating her 6-1, 6-2. Musilovich finished shorty after, defeating Manzi Tenorio 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5, improving to 16-4 in dual matches this season. With the team match score at 3-0, the Cougars needed one more win to ensure a team victory. They received it at No. 6 singles as Charlotte Koning captured the fourth point for the Cougars after defeating Watrous 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 2, Googe made it 5-0 after winning a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6, and having her opponent unable to continue due to injury. With the win, Googe is now tied with current assistant coach, Eka Burduli, on the all-time singles victories with 90.
At No. 4, Kankaras added to the Cougar point tally after besting Sanders 6-3, 6-1. Kankaras is now only two wins back from Erica Perkins on the all-time wins list with 85 career victories. At No. 1, Vasilieva fell to Steur 7-6, 4-6, 10-6, as the two played a tiebreaker for the third set with the team outcome already decided.
The Cougars continue play Sunday morning at 10 PT when they take on the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City.
