Melissa Pine begins her second season as the assistant women's tennis coach at Washington State.
A four-year letter winner for the Cougars (1996-2000), Pine was British Columbia's No. 1 ranked player for women's open singles in 2002. She was an honorary elite member of the Jericho Tennis Club in Vancouver (2000-02).
As a player, Pine recorded 64 singles victories in her career and teamed with Moniek van de Ven to register the third best winning percentage (.800) in WSU career doubles. The 64 singles wins tie her for fifth best in Cougar history.
The 25-year-old native of Newfoundland, Canada helped the Cougars reach the NCAA Tournament during her sophomore (1998) and junior (1999) seasons. In 1998, she posted 17 singles victories and teamed with van de Ven for 10 doubles wins.
As a junior, Pine recorded 16 wins and finished No. 29 in the final Northwest Region rankings. In doubles, Pine teamed with Tamara Filipovic to finish 15th in the ITA Northwest Region rankings. She was named a scholar-athlete by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In addition, she earned Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic Honorable Mention honors.
Pine closed her WSU playing career with 18 wins as a senior. She finished No. 22 in singles and No. 7 with Filipovic in doubles in the ITA Northwest Region rankings. In the classroom, she earned Pac-10 All-Academic First Team honors, becoming only the third Cougar tennis player to accomplish the feat. In addition, she again earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award, becoming the first Cougar tennis player to receive the honor twice.
She graduated with a degree in international business and was awarded the Pac-10's Post-Graduate Scholarship in 2000. Pine will graduate in May 2004 with a master's of business degree in finance.
Prior to returning to WSU in 2002, Pine was an account manager for TEKsystems in Vancouver.
She was born May 18, 1978 in Newfoundland, Canada. Her parents are Louis Pine and Moira Boyd. She has one brother Jason, one niece Emily and one nephew Michael.
