Tennis Completes Successful First Day of Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State dominated play in during the first day of the Cougar Classic at the Stadium Way Tennis Center.
Five Cougars were unbeaten in their respective singles draw and four doubles teams posted first round victories.
"I was very impressed with the way we competed and found ways to win on the majority of the courts," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said.
Sophomore Ekaterina Burduli (Tel Aviv, Israel), ranked 45th in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, earned a first round bye in No. 1 singles and posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Idaho's Kareen Konishi.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals in No. 1 singles for the Cougars was Aleksandra Cekic (London, Ontario). Cekic knocked off Eastern Washington's Kasey Knox 6-2, 6-4 and notched a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Idaho's Mariel Tinnirello.
In No. 2 singles play, first-year Cougars Maria Ring, Marjolein van de Ven and Bianca Selaru each advanced to the semifinals with two victories.
"Our newcomers performed well and helped get our season off to a good start," Hart said.
