Strong Afternoon Surge Lifts Cougars at Big Ten Invite

GOLD RIVER, Calif. (April 18, 2026) – Washington State women's rowing highlighted the day with a win from the 2V8 and a pair of second-place finishes after a full slate of racing on day one of the Big Ten Invite.
The Cougars opened the morning going head-to-head with some of the top boats in the nation right from the start with No. 9 California, No. 23 Indiana and Minnesota in the first session of the day.
The WSU 8+ shells had strong showings despite placing fourth among the heat. The 2V8 crossed the finish line in 6:41.45, fewer than three seconds behind third-place Minnesota (6:38.50) and fewer than five seconds behind second-place Indiana (6:36.62). California finished first with a time of 6:24.68.
The Cougar 1V8 finished fourth in 6:39.90 behind first-place California (6:12.15), second-place Indiana (6:23.85) and third-place Minnesota (6:26.63).
WSU's 1V4 ran a time of 7:26.42 in its heat to place fourth behind California's first-place time of 7:12.02, Indiana in second (7:17.23) and Minnesota in third (7:18.00).
The 2V4 saw California cross first in 7:16.43, followed by Minnesota (7:27.03), Indiana (7:28.03), and Washington State (7:46.12).
The afternoon session provided the best finishes of the day for the Cougars, starting with a couple of second-place finishes in each the 2V4 and 1V4. WSU ran a time of 7:38.81 in the 2V4 behind only USC (7:25.26), and then crossed the finish line in 7:31.30, again trailing only USC (7:25.61).
Wazzu collected its lone win of the day with the 2V8 shell, crossing in a time of 6:37.31 ahead of USC (6:40.83), Michigan State (6:46.83), Wisconsin (6:56.16) and San Diego (7:02.26).
The 1V8 race rounded out the day, seeing the Cougars finish third in 6:35.37 behind USC (6:27.45) and Michigan State (6:28.46), respectively.
