PULLMAN, Wash. (March 7, 2023) – Washington State recorded its seventh straight win with an 8-2 victory over Seattle U at Bailey-Brayton Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars improved to 11-1 for their best start since 1980 (18-0) and closed out their homestand a perfect 4-0 after sweeping Southern Indiana over the weekend.

Cam Magee collected three hits including a pair of doubles,
Sam Brown homered for the fourth straight game,
Jonah Advincula tallied two more hits and
Elijah Hainline drove in two runs. Starter
Shane Spencer retired 10 straight after surrendering a two-run home run in the second inning and picked up his first WSU win after striking out seven in five innings. Â

Seattle U (2-8) used a two-run home run in the second inning for an early lead but the Cougars answered with a run in the second, four in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first inning, Advincula led off the Cougar half inning with a triple down the right field line but was stranded after three straight strikeouts. Seattle U took a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second but WSU answered with a run on a
Kyle Russell fielder's choice RBI-groundout in the bottom of the inning.

Spencer settled in after the home run, retiring 10 straight at one point before giving way to the bullpen following a scoreless fifth. In the WSU fifth, Brown evened things up with a sacrifice fly to score Advincula and Magee later drove in the go-ahead run with a hustle-double into shallow centerfield that scored
Jacob McKeon for a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Hainline added an RBI-sacrifice fly to centerfield and
Alan Shibley made it 5-2 with an RBI-single back up the middle to cap the five-run inning.

In the sixth, Brown launched a one-out solo homer to straight-away centerfield to push the lead to 6-2.

The Cougar bullpen sealed things up as lefthander
Cam Liss recorded the first two outs of the sixth inning, righthander
Andrew Baughn recorded the third out and retired the six hitters before
Chase Grillo closed things out with a scoreless ninth.
