BOULDER, Colo. – Washington State men's golf senior Pono Yanagi tied his best-career finish by carding 4-under; 66 in the final round of the 2022 Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational. The Hilo, Hawai'i native tied for fifth place after he posted 2-under; 208 to earn his second top-five finish of the season.
"Pono had a solid week," said Head Coach Dustin White. "Posting back-to-back top five finishes speaks to how well he's playing. His bogey-free 66 today was impressive and it will be exciting to see how the rest of his season unfolds".
Yanagi collected four birdies during the final round to go 1-under on his front nine and 3-under on his back nine. The senior moved up an impressive 16 spots on the player leaderboard in his final round of play to give Yanagi his third career top-10 finish.
The Washington State men's golf team finished at 18-over; 858 in three rounds of play at the Boulder Country Club. Two Cougars finished in a tie for 42nd place on the player leaderboard, as junior Preston Bebich and sophomore Peter Jung carded 6-over; 216. Bebich had four birdies in his final round and bumped up four spots on the player leaderboard after round two.
Junior Jaden Cantafio carded 9-over; 219 and freshman Sam Renner finished at 12-over; 222 to end the three-day tournament.
The Cougars resumed second round play Tuesday morning after play was suspended Monday due to inclement weather. Wazzu finished the round at 9-over; 289 to put them in a tie for tenth place heading into the final round. Jung carded 1-over; 71 and went into the third round in a tie for tenth place on the player leaderboard. Yanagi shot even-par in the second round to finish in a tie for 21st.
The University of Wyoming shot 2-under; 838 to take the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational team title. Utah Valley's Brady McKinlay took first place after he carded 7-under; 203.

"We've got a short turnaround before Oregon State, so we need to refocus and get to work on some things," White said. "These guys know they are better than this and I'm eager to see how they respond."
