THIS WEEK - The Washington State men's golf team continues the second half of the 2018-19 campaign with the three-day John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23 at the Wailua Golf Course at Lihue, Hawai'i.
THE COURSE - Wailua Golf Course plays at a par 72 across a 6,991-yard course...the course is located at Lihue, Hawai'i on the Island of Kaua'i...Wailua is set with towering mountains to one side, and a breathtaking view of the ocean on the other, running along the coast.
THIS TOURNAMENT - The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is in its 43rd year and is considered the University of Hawai'i's premier golf tournament...the tournament has found its home at many golf courses over its 43-year history, but recently landed at Wailua Golf Course in 2014.
LAST TIME AT THE JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE - Last time the Cougars visited the Aloha State, they placed 17th with a team score of 891 (+27) in February 2018...then-seniors Derek Bailey (+3, 219) and Brian Mogg (+6, 222) led the charge and tied for 43rd and 64th respectively...then-sophomores Daniel Kolar (+7, 223), who tied for 72nd, and Nicklaus Chiam (+17, 233), who tied for 107th, followed...then-junior AJ Armstrong rounded off the pack, placing 120th shooting a 149 (+5) after not competing in the third round.
THE FIELD - Joining WSU on the green will be No. 2 Duke, No. 14 Arizona State, No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 23 BYU, No. 34 North Carolina, No. 36 UNLV, No. 45 Arizona, CSUN, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary's, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UTEP and Virginia.
LAST TIME ON THE GREEN - Last time the Cougars picked up the clubs was to tee-off the spring season at the Anteater Invitational, Feb. 11-12 at Big Canyon Country Club at Newport Beach, Calif. ...Washington State took fourth in the competition, with all players finishing in the Top-30...junior Daniel Kolar lead the way, tying for eighth with a three-round score of 217 (+1)...seniors Grant Cole (+5, 221) and AJ Armstrong (+7, 223) placed in ties for 14th and 20th respectively...junior Nicklaus Chiam shot a 224 (+8) to take sole possession of 22nd and junior Scott Redelsperger tied for 29th after shooting 229 (+13).
THE LINEUP - Travelling to Hawai'i for the Cougars will be junior Daniel Kolar, seniors Grant Cole and AJ Armstrong, and juniors Nicklaus Chiam and Scott Redelsperger.
COACHES - Head coach Dustin White continues his third season as head coach for the Cougars after playing on the team for four years from 1999-2003...White was a three-time All-Pac-10 selection, including a first team selection in 2002...one of the most decorated golfers in Cougar history, he set a school record with eight top-10 finishes, including a tournament victory and national player of the week all in the same season...assisting White is first-year assistant coach Kevin Tucker...Tucker is another Cougar golf alumn, having golfed for the team from 2006-2010...Tucker became just the second Cougar to be invited to the NCAA Regional Championship in his junior year, and returned the next year.
