HONOLULU – Freshman Yang Lee captured both matches to highlight Washington State's first day of play at the 2019 Rainbow Wahine Invitational, hosted by the University Hawaii Thursday at the UH Tennis Courts.
 
The Cougars and Hawaii played singles and doubles matches though no team scores are kept in the tournament format. WSU captured six of the seven singles matches while the two teams split the four doubles matches.
 
Lee, a freshman from Taichung, Taiwan, had little trouble in defeating Alzbeta Houbova, winning 6-1, 6-0. She began the day by teaming with sophomore Michaela Bayerlova to defeat Nikola Dolakova and Maayan Sela, 6-2. Bayerlova, ranked No. 83 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking, went the distance to defeat Sela, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in their singles match.
 
Seniors Tiffany Mylonas and Aneta Miksovska both cruised in their singles matches. Mylonas defeated Michelle Pits, 6-2, 6-0, while Miksovska dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sophia Storch. The pair teamed together in doubles, falling 6-4 to Roxanna Resma and Petra Melounova.
 
Freshman Savanna Ly-Nguyen, who joined the Cougar program this month, made her Cougar debut with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Resma while freshman teammate, Hikaru Sato, dropped her 2019 debut, falling 7-5, 6-2 to Dolakova. Junior Melisa Ates played a one-set exhibition match and defeated Storch, 6-0.
 
In the remaining two doubles matches, Ates and Sato fell 6-4 to Dolakova and Sela, while WSU's pair of Jovana Knezevic and Ege Tomey defeated Pits and Houbova, 6-3.
 
The Rainbow Wahine Invitational continues Friday at 1 p.m. PT. WSU will face players from Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific in both singles and doubles.
