CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 15 Washington State rowing's third varsity eight had the best Cougar finish of the day, claiming second in the 'A' Final, as the Cougars placed sixth as a team amongst a field of eight ranked competitors, Saturday at the Clemson Invitational at Lake Hartwell.

WSU's varsity eight placed sixth and the second varsity eight seventh in their respective 'A' Finals, as the Cougar varsity four finished second in the 'B' Final for ninth overall. The two-day Clemson Invite started Friday with the first session heats. The second session of competition kicked off the day Saturday with the results from Friday and Saturday determining placement in Saturday evening's finals.

Washington State, ranked 15th in the latest poll, finished with 97 total points, 51 points for sixth in the varsity eight, 32 for the second varsity eight and 14 for the varsity four's ninth-place finish. No. 4 Ohio State won the team championship with 130 points, followed by No. 9 Virginia in second (124 points), No. 12 Wisconsin in third (113 points), No. 17 Indiana in fourth (111 points) and No.13 USC in fifth (110 points). Duke (seventh, 85), No. 18 Syracuse (eighth, 84), Oregon State (ninth, 76), and Minnesota (10th, 71) rounded out the top 10.

"Overall I was proud of efforts this weekend," said WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere. "There is a lot of a good energy. They are a resilient group of women and their learning curve has been steep, so we will continue to head in the right direction."

In the morning session, the Cougar third varsity (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, stroke- Ella Cowan de Wolf, Emily Weible, Sara Brevick, Jessica Norris, Emma Barrett, Madeleine Bingham, Codi Swenson, bow- Sophia Rogers) booked a spot in the 'A' Final as it placed second to Virginia, with the top-two boats advancing through. The Cougars placed second in their 'A' Final. Ohio State claimed first in the heat with a time at 6:32.350, coming in ahead of the second-place Cougars by four seconds (6:36.570). WSU defeated five other crews including, Minnesota (6:36.78), UCLA (6:40.300), and No. 9 Virginia (6:40.320).

WSU's varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Kamila Ondrackova, Jess Brougham, Kristel Tohu, Lucie Weissova, Emily Thomson, Paige Danielson, Rosalina Torcivia, bow- Ivy Elling Quaintance) started Saturday morning by placing second in the opening heat, which secured a spot in the 'A' Final that afternoon. In the Cougars' final race of the day, they battled five top-20 ranked teams in the 'A' Final. WSU beat Duke to claim sixth, crossing the finish line at 6:21.350. No. 4 Ohio State finished the course at 6:10.890 to win the heat, ahead of No.13 USC (6:12.650, second), No. 9 Virginia (6:15.200, third), No. 12 Wisconsin (6:16.370, fourth), and No. 20 Indiana (6:19.000, fifth).

The Cougar second varsity eight (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Lisa Gutfleisch, Taija Thompson, Colombe de Rouvroy, Kateryna Maistrenko, Emily Morrow, Linnea Davison, Jenna Kennedy, bow-Jasmine Brake) began Saturday morning as it placed second to Ohio State in the qualifying heat, advancing to the 'A' Final by beating out five other boats. In the 'A' Final, WSU placed seventh in a final that consisted solely of ranked teams. WSU finished the heat with a time at 6:32.930, which was two seconds off the pace of No. 20 Oklahoma. No. 9 Virginia won the final at 6:17.570, followed by No. 4 Ohio State (6:20.790), No. 13 USC (6:20.920), No. 12 Wisconsin (6:27.480), and No. 17 Indiana (6:29.480) which rounded out the rest of the field.

WSU's varsity four (coxswain- Chloe White, Emma Gribbon, Renee Kemp, Grace Arnis, bow- Sue Yu) began its day with a third-place finish in the qualifying heat, which resulted in placement to the 'B' Final. In the 'B' Final, the Cougars placed second in a tight contest. In a race that was decided by just over a second, Louisville won the final at 7:10.130. WSU finished with a time at 7:11.300, beating out five crews including, Minnesota (7:15.090, third), Pac-12 opponent Oregon State (7:19.600, fourth) and No.18 Syracuse (7:16.290, seventh).

After a weekend off the Cougars will head to Spokane, Saturday, April 28 to face Gonzaga on Silver Lake. The regatta will mark the final tune up for WSU before the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, May 13.
