Cougar Rowing Heads North to Spokane

The Cougars' last race before the Pac-12 Championships.
COUGAR ROWING HEADS NORTH TO SPOKANE TO FACE GONZAGA: No.15 Washington State rowing heads to Spokane to race regional rival, Gonzaga, in the battle for the Fawley Cup at Silver Lake, Saturday April 28, with racing scheduled to begin at 9 a.m...Gonzaga received two votes in the latest polls.
THE 2018 FAWLEY CUP REGATTA: Boats will compete in a two-kilometer race that takes place on Silver Lake...the regatta begins with the second varsity four race starting at 9 a.m., followed by the varsity four set to begin at 9:15 a.m, the second varsity eight race at 9:30 a.m., and the varsity eights at 9:45 a.m...racing will commence with the third varsity eight, novice eight, and second novice eight race set for 10:15 a.m.
ABOUT THE 27TH FAWLEY CUP: Â Washington State and Gonzaga's varsity eights meet each spring to compete for the Fawley Cup...the Fawley Cup has been awarded each year since 1991, with the exception of a canceled regatta in 2008...WSU has won 23 of the 26 Fawley Cup races since its inception.
LAST SEASON AGAINST GONZAGA: WSU won its 23rd Fawley Cup at the Snake River at Pullman, as the varsity eight crossed at 7:03.440, Gonzaga followed at 7:16.240...the Cougars' second varsity eight powered through the line at 7:20.770, ahead of Gonzaga's 7:25.990 finish, which ensured Cougar victories in two of the top three varsity races...WSU's varsity four fell in competition as it finished with a time at 9:09.490, placing behind Gonzaga's 'A' and 'B' varsity four, which crossed at 8:39.660 and 8:56.030, respectively...in the last race of the regatta, the Cougars' fourth varsity eight finished at 7:51.010, two seconds behind Gonzaga's fourth varsity eight which won the heat (7:49.000)...WSU's fifth varsity eight rounded out the race, finishing at 8:46.770.
WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON RACING GONZAGA: "Our programs are carrying the torch for Eastern Washington rowing. It's a great tradition we have with our home and home with Gonzaga. They are only an hour and 20 minutes away, which makes for an easy trip to face talented competition...we have made some lineup adjustments, so the race will let us see a new configuration and how it works before the Pac-12 Championships."
COUGARS RANKED 15TH IN USROWING/CRCA PRESEASON POLL: WSU is ranked 15th in the nation in this week's USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Coaches Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells, released April 25...five of the seven Pac-12 rowing teams are ranked in the top-20 poll, Washington-T-first, California-T-first, Stanford-fifth, USC-12th, and WSU-15th…Oregon State (24) and UCLA (14) are receiving votes. Â
COACHING STAFF: Jane LaRiviere is in her 16th year as head coach of the WSU rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 11 NCAA Championships and five-straight under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell, coordinator of operations Amy Van Buskirk, and graduate assistant Dave Kempsell...Huhta is in his fourth year with the Cougars, and first year as associate head coach…Campbell is in his third year and first as novice coach…Van Buskirk and Kempsell are each in their first year with the Cougars.
NEXT FOR THE COUGARS: The Cougars have two weeks to prepare before heading to Gold River, Calif., Sunday, May 13 for the 2018 Pac-12 Championships.
