Sam Brown Drafted by Los Angeles Angels in 12th Round

SEATTLE (July 11, 2023) – Washington State infielder Sam Brown was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 12th round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday.
 
Brown is the second Cougar selected in the draft, joining outfielder Jonah Advincula who went to the Cleveland Guardians in the eighth round Monday. Brown is the first Cougar drafted by the Angels since outfielder Kyle Johnson was selected in the 25th round of the 2012 draft.
 
Brown, a junior first baseman, was named to the All-Pac-12 Conference Team in his first season competing in the league after finishing tying for fifth in the league with a .374 batting average, tied for sixth in doubles (19), sixth in on-base percentage (.481), seventh in slugging (.674), tenth in RBI (58) and with a league-best 19 hit-by-pitches. In his first season after transferring from Portland, the lefthanded hitting Brown started all 52 games, committed just one error in 273 chances, led the team with 22 multiple-hit games and 19 multiple-RBI games and posted a team season-long 14-game hitting streak. In conference play, Brown led WSU with a .343 batting average and tallied eight doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI.
 
Prior to WSU, Brown played two seasons at Portland, earning Freshman All-America honors in 2021 after hitting .315 with five home runs, 16 doubles and 21 RBI. Brown earned All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention in 2022 after collecting eight doubles, six homers and 31 RBI including a team-high five home runs in league play.
