Cougs tally pair of podium finishes to close out Pac-12 Championships

| By:
WALNUT, Calif. —Jared McAlvey improved on his seventh all-time standing at WSU in the 400m hurdles (50.23) to place second and Zach Stallings finished third in the men's 1,500m in 3:44.34 as Washington State men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the 2023 Pac-12 Championships Saturday.  On the women's side, Mackenzie Fletcher (400m hurdles, 59.34) and Micaela De Mello (100m hurdles, 13.38) each grabbed fifth-place finishes in Sunday's finals, the final day of the three-day conference meet at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Ronald Grueso Mosquera scored first for the Cougs with a seventh-place finish in the men's discus after a PR of 56.76m (185' 7") on his first throw of the afternoon.  Max Moore also grabbed a PR in the men's discus with a 54.00m mark during the first of two flights.

The men's 4X100m relay reached a season-best time of 39.73 as the Cougs' freshman sprinter, Hinchliffe, held on in the anchor leg to win the opening heat.  The women's 4X100m relay team followed up with a 44.72 to finish second in their heat and fifth overall.

Stallings (3:44.34) fell only two seconds off of the pace in a competitive men's 1,500m field to earn his best finish in any event at the Pac-12 Championships.  Jared McAlvey was even with the lead pace of the men's 400m hurdles coming out of the final turn, but he fell just under one second shy of the title with a runner-up finish in 50.23, the seventh-fastest time in WSU program history as he improved on his season-best by .01.

Mackenzie Fletcher clocked a new PR in the women's 400m hurdles (59.34) and the Cougs wrapped up the meet with season-best times in both the men's (3:14.49, seventh-place) and women's (3:40.02, eighth-place) 4X400m relays.

The Cougars' 2023 outdoor season will continue with the 2023 NCAA West Preliminary Round on May 24-27 in Sacramento, Calif.  The top 48 declared student-athletes in each event will be accepted into the West Preliminary Round in addition to the top 24 declared relay teams.
