Kurui Claims Second-Team All-America, Top-10 in 5K

EUGENE, Ore. – Washington State distance runner Evans Kurui concluded his sophomore season with a ninth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run final at the 2026 NCAA Division-I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Friday evening, at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The performance earned Kurui NCAA Second-Team All-America honors, becoming the first Cougar 5-kilometer All-American since fellow Kenyan countryman Bernard Lagat won the title in 1999.

Returning to the track for his second national final of the weekend, Kurui claimed a top-10 finish in his first-career 5,000-meter national championship, clocking a time of 13:51.49. The sophomore is the first Coug since 2008 to earn two All-America honors in the same postseason, when thrower McKenzie Garberg clinched national recognition in the discus and hammer throws.

The 2026 NCAA Championships conclude Saturday, June 13 with Rosemary Longisa competing in the 1,500-meter final at 5:12 p.m. Longisa enters with the nation's top time and the second-best time in NCAA history. Fans can watch the race live on ESPN2.
