Kurui Earns First-Team All-America, Sixth in 10K
June 10, 2026 | Track
EUGENE, Ore. –Washington State sophomore distance runner Evans Kurui finished sixth in the men's 10,000-meter run national championship at the 2026 NCAA Division-I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Wednesday evening, at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Kurui's spot earned him NCAA Outdoor First-Team All-America recognition for the second-straight season in college track's longest event.
Kurui clocked a time of 28:10.73, pacing with the lead pack through the middle of the race and maintaining a spot in the top-3 in the final 4,000 meters. The Kenyan moved out to control the lead in the final three laps, looking to fend off a strong kick from his competitors.
Kurui crossed the finish line 10 seconds behind the podium leaders and clinched his second-consecutive top-8 finish. He becomes the first Cougar to earn back-to-back first-team honors since Jeshua Anderson repeated as the four-time 400-meter hurdles NCAA champion from 2008 to 2011.
The Cougars return to the track Thursday for the opening day of women's competition. Rosemary Longisa and Caroline Jepkorir will compete in semifinals, looking to qualify for Saturday's finals. Longisa will compete in the 1,500-meter run beginning at 5:21 p.m., followed by Jepkorir at 5:38 p.m. in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The remaining three days of the NCAA Championships will be televised on ESPN2. Tickets for the NCAA Championships are available via Ticketmaster and the Hayward Field website. A complete schedule of events and results will be posted to NCAA.com at the conclusion of competition.
