No. 13 WSU Falls at No. 1 Washington

SEATTLE – No. 13 Washington State University raced five crews against the top-ranked Huskies, as Washington completed the sweep Saturday, in dual action as part of the Boeing Apple Cup Series at Seattle's Montlake Cut.

The reigning-NCAA Champions and top-ranked team in the country, Washington, swept all five races Saturday, as both teams raced varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, third varsity eight and freshman/novice crews.

"The Huskies backed up their number one ranking. It was a tough day, but I'm certain we are better for it," said WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere. "I'm looking forward to getting back on the water Monday."

The varsity eight (coxswain-Ellie Burg, stroke-Lisa Gutfleisch, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Emily Morrow, Lucie Weissova, Kristel Tohu, Paige Danielson, Rosalina Torcivia, bow-Kateryna Maistrenko) was the last of the Cougar crews to compete Saturday. In the closest contest of the day, Washington took first place to secure the Apple Cup, finishing in a time of 6:30.666, 14 seconds ahead of Washington State in at 6:46.963.

WSU's second varsity eight (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Kamila Ondrackova, Taija Thompson, Colombe de Rouvroy, Jasmine Brake, Jenna Kennedy, Jessica Norris, Linnea Davison, bow- Renee Kemp) finished with a time of 7:04.263, behind Washington which crossed the finish line at 6:38.358.

The Cougar varsity four (coxswain-Chloe White, Emma Gribbon, Emily Weible, Grace Arnis, bow-Sue Yu) saw action against two varsity four crews from Washington. The Huskies' varsity four won the heat by posting a time at 7:25.479, finishing just ahead of the varsity four B crew, which crossed the finish line at 7:33.522. WSU's varsity four finished with a time of 7:53.722.

In the Cougars' second heat of the day, the third varsity eight (coxswain-Juliet Perry, stroke-Emily Thomson, Jess Brougham, Ella Cowan de Wolf, Jordyn Brounstein, Codi Swenson, Madeleine Bingham, Sara Brevick, bow-Sophia Rogers) fell to Washington. The Huskies completed the course with a time at 6:52.727, while WSU came in with a time at 7:12.866.

WSU's novice eight (coxswain- Heidi Dufek, stroke- Emma Barrett, Ellie Higgins, Nora Hefte, Isabella Cristelli, McKenna Menner, Madison Williams, Emily Austin, Cassidy Thompson) took in its first action of the spring season, completing the course at 7:21.292. Washington's freshman crew took the heat with a time at 6:58.960.

WSU continues its spring season in its only home regatta of the season at Wawawai Landing against Pac-12 foe Oregon State, Saturday, April 7.
