Layne Bruner Drafted In 18th Round by Baltimore

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State pitcher Layne Bruner was selected in the 18th round by the Baltimore Orioles in the Major League Baseball Draft Saturday.
Bruner, a junior lefthander from Montesano, Wash. appeared in 13 games out of the bullpen for the Cougars in 2016. Bruner recorded 10 strikeouts in 10 innings of work highlighted by a four-strikeout performance in two scoreless innings against Gonzaga and three strikeouts in two innings against Utah Valley.
Bruner owns 47 career appearances in a Cougar uniform, mainly as a reliever, and recorded 38 strikeouts 46.2 career innings pitched. Bruner was taken as the No. 541 overall pick, No. 15 selection in the 18th round and is the first Cougar selected by the Orioles since pitcher Tanner Chleborad in 2014.
Earlier Saturday, Cougar pitcher Ian Hamilton was drafted in the 11th round by the Chicago White Sox and incoming freshman pitcher Jake Polancic was also drafted in the 11th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
