October 15, 2019 | Men's Golf
CORVALLIS, Ore – The Washington State men's golf team saved its best for last, posting its best round of the tournament Tuesday to finish 11th at the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Â
After finishing the final few holes of the second round that was postponed Monday due to darkness, the Cougars shot a combined score of 289 (+5) in the third round of play, their best round as a team this season. After an opening-round 308 (+24), WSU improved to 292 (+8) in round two and then 289 in the final round.
Â
Host Oregon State (-18) won by 19 strokes over San Francisco. Utah and Arizona (+13) tied for third. Individually, Oregon State's Carson Barry (-11) came away with a six-stroke victory over San Francisco's Matthew Anderson.
Â
"We were one round away from putting things together this week," said WSU Head Coach Dustin White. "Regardless, we still took a huge step forward. The guys played hard and had good energy the last two rounds. We just need to set a better pace from the beginning and we'll be alright. We have another short week of practice and then head out again on Saturday. There were some really good things that happened this week and we'll highlight that when we work with the guys this week."
Â
Leading the way for the Cougars was senior Nicklaus Chiam for the second-straight tournament. Chiam finished his second round with a score of 71 (E), then played a strong third round. Chiam started one-under-par with a birdie to start the day, then hit his second birdie six holes later. Chiam remained steady throughout the round and finished with a 73 (+2) on the day and a combined score of 218 (+5), placing him in a tie for 23rd.
Â
Freshmen Christian Yanagi and Yuya Eguchi, and senior Daniel Kolar all led the way for WSU in the third round. Finishing with a score of 72 (+1), Yanagi caught fire early in the day, hitting five birdies in his first eight holes. Yanagi ended his run in Corvallis shooting a 221 (+8) good for sole possession of 33rd. Eguchi finished in a tie for 40th with a score of 224 (+11). Two strokes behind was Kolar finishing with a 226 (+13) and tied for 50th. Freshman Clayton Thatcher recorded a three-round score of 233 (+20), tied for 71st.

The Cougars return to the green next week, Monday, Oct. 21-23 in Stockton, Calif. for the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational hosted by the University of the Pacific.
