Armstrong Finishes Fourth After Strong Third Round to Lead Cougars

Washington State finished sixth at the Husky Invitational, which ended Wednesday.
SAMMAMISH, Wash. - Led by a tournament best 67 in the third round, senior AJ Armstrong finished fourth as the Washington State men's golf team finished sixth as a team after the third and final round of the Husky Invitational, Wednesday, at Aldarra Golf Course.Â
"This will be a test of every aspect of our games and we will be better from playing this course," said head coach Dustin White. "After two events now, we should have a good idea of what needs work and how to start contending."Â
Armstrong (+3, 216) had a strong finish in the second week of the Cougars' 2018-19 campaign with seven birdies in the third round. He had his best placement in his WSU career, followed by the Itani Quality Home Collegiate at Palouse Ridge in the fall of 2017, where he tied for fifth. Armstrong finished behind Rober Moran (-1, 212) in first, and Joey Vrzich (+1, 214) and Noah Woolsey (+1, 214) tied for second.Â
Washington State finished the tournament carding a 1131 (+66) three-round score, placing sixth of the 12 teams participating. Washington, host of the tournament, held its first-place lead from the first day of competition with a score of 1086 (+21) ahead of Nevada (+37, 1102) in second and Boise State (+46, 111) in third. The Cougars finished just one stroke behind Seattle in fifth place, and two strokes ahead of Sweden in seventh.Â
Junior Daniel Kolar (+13, 226) tied for 27th, while junior Nicklaus Chiam (230, +17) tied for 40th, and sophomore Ryan Maine (242, +29) tied for 63rd. Senior Grant Cole (228, +15), tying for 33rd, and junior Scott Redelsperger (238, +25), tying for 60th, improved their placings from the previous day. Â
"We have a week off before our next tournament and will be working hard to put ourselves in a position to go out and play more to our ability," said White.Â
Washington State continues its fall campaign Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 8-9, at the Paintbrush Invitational at Parker Colo. Â
