Cougars Travel North to Head of the Spokane

WSU rowing will race against Gonzaga on the Spokane River this Saturday.
WSU ROWING HEADS NORTH TO SPOKANE: The Washington State University women's rowing team is making the short trek north to Spokane, to compete in the Head of the Spokane against Gonzaga, Saturday, Oct. 13…the regatta starts at 9 a.m. and will take place on the Spokane River.
THE 2018 HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: Racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in head format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other...the Head of the Spokane is hosted by the Gonzaga rowing team...the race covers a 5,000-meter stretch of the Spokane River.
LAST YEAR AT THE HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: The WSU varsity eight set the pace in the first flight with the fastest time of the day, completing the 5,000-meter course at 16:50...that time beat out Gonzaga's varsity eight by 18 seconds, which finished second behind the Cougars. WSU's second varsity eight had a strong showing, completing the flight at 17:20 to place third...WSU's third varsity eight followed behind Gonzaga's second varsity eight at 17:54...the WSU varsity four finished a full minute and second ahead of Gonzaga's varsity four with a time of 19:57. In the second flight, WSU's varsity eight finished with a time of 17:17, which was five seconds behind Gonzaga's varsity eight that won the second flight...WSU's second varsity eight followed with a time of 17:42 to capture third. WSU's varsity four finished with a time of 20:53.
LAST TIME ON THE WATER: WSU raced seven pairs in the women's coxless 4,000-meter flight and four individuals raced in the women's single sculls at the Burnaby Lake Invitational in British Columbia...Lisa Gutfleisch and Ivy Elling Quaintance finished first in the pairs race with a time of 16:19:373 on the 4,000-meter course, becoming the first Cougars to accomplish that feat. Gutfleisch and Elling Quaintance captured the title of Regatta Champions as Elling Quaintance's won the sprint for the third-straight year... the pair of Rosalina Torcivia and Jess Brougham placed fourth in the time trial with 16:53, just three seconds ahead of teammates Paige Danielson and Kamila Ondrackova who clocked a time of 16:56...both qualified for the sprint, as the top-six advanced...in the women's single sculls, Renee Kemp had the highest finish for the Cougars at eighth overall and sixth amongst the senior category with a time of 18:25...Kemp was followed by Emma Conaty with a time of 18:35 who finished ninth overall.
COACHING STAFF: Jane LaRiviere begins her 17th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 12 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere... she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell, assistant coach Dave Kempsell, coordinator of operations Amy Vanbuskirk, and graduate assistant Olivia Hecimovich... Huhta is in his fifth year with the Cougars, and second year as associate head coach... Campbell is entering his fourth year.... Kempsell comes in for his second year, his first as an assistant coach with the Cougars after serving as the graduate assistant last year.
NEXT UP FOR THE COUGARS: WSU will head to Portland, Ore. to compete at the Portland Fall Classic hosted by Station L Rowing Club.
