Cougars Drop Game To California
May 29, 2016 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped a 7-0 decision to the University of California at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon. The series is even at a game apiece after WSU's 4-1 win Friday.
The Cougars (19-34, 11-18 Pac-12) received a strong pitching performance from junior starter Ian Hamilton who went six innings, allowed three earned runs and stuck out one in his final start of the season. Hamilton recorded his 70th career appearance, tying for ninth in WSU history with Adam Conley who is currently pitching in the Miami Marlins starting rotation. California improved to 31-21 overall and 13-16 in conference play after limiting the Cougars to one hit, a third-inning double by J.J. Hancock.
Both starting pitchers cruised through the first two innings before Cal pushed a run across in the third. The Bears opened the inning with two singles and bunted both runners up before a sacrifice fly brought home a run. Cal added two more runs in the fourth on three hits and an error to take a 3-0 lead.
Jefferies (7-0) pitched well throughout the afternoon, surrendering a two-out double to Hancock in the third inning and issued just two walks while striking out six in his five innings of work. The Bears added three more runs on three hits in the seventh and another one in the ninth to extend the lead to 7-0. Cal reliever Alex Schick matched Jefferies' effort with a four no-hit innings while striking out four to notch his first save of the season.
The Cougars close out the series and season Sunday at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
