Skjonsby Homers Twice as Cougars Clinch Series at UNLV

The Cougars notched their third straight series win and fourth in their last five weekends including their last two road conference series. WSU improved to 21-19 overall including 9-6 in Mountain West play while UNLV dropped to 23-17 overall and 6-9 in league. The Cougars recorded their 12th road of the season, tied for third-most in a season since 2000.

Skjonsby had three hits including a pair of long solo home runs and scored three times while Gavin Roy added three hits and two RBI and Max Hartmand doubled and triples and drove in two runs. Hartman tied the school record with his seventh triple of the season.

Cougar reliever August Richie earned the win with 3.1 scoreless innings of work.

WSU built a 7-1 fourth-inning lead before UNLV scored in three straight innings to take an 8-7 lead. The Cougars tied it with a Kyler Northrop sacrifice fly in the seventh before Skjonsby led off the nineth with a long home run down the right field line.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Robinson gave the Cougars an early lead with a solo homer to centerfield in the second inning but the Rebels answered with a run on a pair of hits in their half of the second. WSU went right back in front after Hartman's RBI-double to right-centerfield and Pirello followed with a two-out RBI-single into centerfield to score Hartman for a 3-1 advantage.

WSU struck for four in the fourth on a Skjonsby solo homer to right, Roy's two-run single and Hartman's RBI-triple to left field.

UNLV chipped away with a run in fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie the game at seven and took an 8-7 lead with a two-out RBI-single to right field.

The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the seventh for Northrop who scored Skjonsby with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, tying the game at seven.

Richie worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth inning with a 3-6 ground ball double play and erased a ninth-inning leadoff single with a 4-6-3 double play before ending things with a strikeout.
