The Cougars Trek North to Face Gonzaga at Head of the Spokane
WSU Rowing Heads North to Spokane: The Washington State University women's rowing team is making the short trek north to Spokane, to compete in the Head of the Spokane against Gonzaga, Saturday, Oct. 22…the regatta starts at 9:15 a.m.
The 2016 Head of the Spokane: Racing is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m., Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in head format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other...the Head of the Spokane is hosted by the Gonzaga men's and women's rowing teams...the race covers a 5,000-meter stretch of the Spokane River.
Last Year at the Head of the Spokane: The Cougars' varsity four 'A' won the varsity four event, recording a time of 18:45; eight seconds faster than Gonzaga in the head race...WSU raced five other varsity four boats in the event, and they all finished after Gonzaga's 'A' and 'B' crews...the WSU varsity four 'B' finished just behind Gonzaga's 'B' at 19:13, a nine-second differential...the Cougars also launched a third varsity eight that finished behind Gonzaga's second varsity eight...the third varsity eight finished the 5,000-meter course at 18:52...the Bulldogs' second varsity eight won the heat at 17:59...WSU also raced three novice eights, with the first novice eight crew finishing second at 22:11...Gonzaga's novice eight won the heat crossing at 20:44.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Head of the Spokane: "We had a lot of fun at Burnaby and got some great race experience and some scrimmaging. Now we get to go back to Gonzaga, we raced them earlier in pairs. There's a lot of fan support, both for Gonzaga and for us in Spokane. This time, the race finishes right in front of the boathouse, so you can kind of observe some of the stuff going on."
Last Time on the Water: WSU placed four pairs in the final 250-meter sprint at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, and senior Nicole Hare and freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance won the title of Regatta Champions, Oct. 8 at Burnaby, B.C... Hare and Elling Quaintance came in second in the pair flight of the head race, completing the course at 16:10.65...seniors Ieva Adomaviciute and Mihaela-Teodora Berindei took 26 more seconds, and crossed at 16:36.57, to take third over the 4,000-meter competition... Hare and Elling Quaintance went on to win the 250-meter sprint in front of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club's old grandstand, while Adomaviciute and Berindei finished third...sophomores Paige Danielson and Jess Brougham, who raced the 4,000-meter course at 16:44.70, and freshman Kamila Ondrackova and junior Lucie Weissova (16:45.10) also qualified for the 250-meter final...the pairs placed sixth and fourth in the final, respectively.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere begins her 15th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 10 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Josh Adam, assistant/novice coach Karl Huhta and assistant coach Liz England...Adam is in his seventh year after coaching his prior two years at Indiana...Huhta is in his third year with the Cougars and second as the novice coach...England is entering her first season, after rowing for LaRiviere from 2010-12.
Next up for the Cougars: WSU will close its fall season Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Head of the Lake, hosted by cross-state rival Washington.
