Freshmen Lead Cougars at Husky Invitational

CLE ELUM, Wash. – The Washington State University men's golf team is currently tied for eighth place after shooting 32-over par (600) through two rounds at the Husky Invitational, at the Tumble Hills Golf Course, Monday. Fellow Pac-12 school Oregon State leads the tournament at 10-over par (578).
In addition to OSU, four other Pac-12 schools are competing in the Husky Invitational – three of which are ranked by the Golf Coaches Association of America poll. Rival Washington (+15, 583), ranked No. 19, is tied for second with No. 15 Oregon while No. 5 USC (+16, 584) is in fourth (+16, 584). Utah is in seventh with a score of 597 (+29).
The Cougars carded 28 birdies through two rounds. Aaron Whalen led the team with a score of 146 (+4). The freshman from Ephrata, Wash., shot a 2-under (69) first round and a 6-over (77) second round. Whalen, tied for ninth, is nine strokes back of leader Corey Pereira (-5, 137) of Washington.
Fellow freshman AJ Armstrong, who carded three-straight birdies in the first round, is tied for 14th (+5, 147) in his first collegiate tournament.
Sophomore Derek Bayley is tied for 37th (+10, 152). The sophomore shot 5-over in both the first and second rounds. Seniors Bhurinat Songpaiboon and Evan Omelia are tied for 53rd (+13, 155).
