Cougars Move Up Leaderboard in Final Round

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Washington State men's golf team fired a 290 (+2), Sunday, in the final round of play at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. The Cougars finished in seventh place, jumping one spot on the leaderboard with their lowest round of the tournament. WSU finished 11-over (875) and five strokes ahead of Marquette in eighth place (+16, 880). Iowa State won the tournament, finishing 17-under (847).
WSU's Michael Anderson led the Cougars in the tournament, propelled by a first round 68 (-4). In the final round, Anderson recovered after a rough start that saw him 4-over through nine holes. The senior carded two birdies in the final nine holes to finish 2-over (74) in the final round. Anderson finished the event 1-under (215) and tied for 13th place. The finish is Anderson's second top-25 finish of the season.
Redshirt-senior Sang Lee also recorded a top-25 finish, carding a third round 71 (-1) to finish tied for 23rd place. Lee started the final round strong, firing a three-stroke eagle on the 577-yard No. 11 hole. Lee went on to finish 2-under on the front nine and finish the tournament 3-over (219). The finish marked Lee's third top-25 finish of the season.
Freshman Derek Bayley carded a 75 (+3) in the third round. Coupled with a first round 74 (+2) and second round 71 (-1), Bayley finished tied for 30th place at 4-over (220). Redshirt-senior Alex Wagner notched his lowest round of the tournament, Sunday, to lead the Cougars in the final 18 holes. Wagner fired a 2-under 70 with five birdies to finish the tournament 8-over (224) and tied for 38th place.
Junior Bhurinat Songpaiboon (+21, 237) finished the tournament in 64th place. Senior Charlie Mroz (+9, 225), competing as an individual, finished tied for 44th place.
“Michael got off to a slow start today, but was able to put together a solid tournament,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Alex had a great final round for us, and Sang played strong as well. Now it's time to get back to Pullman and get prepared to host a great championship event.”
The Cougars will return home to host the 2015 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships at WSU's Palouse Ridge Golf Club, April 27-29. The event begins Monday, April 27, with first- and second-round action. Admission is free.
