Box Score

PULLMAN - Washington State first baseman Stefan Bailie capped a 3-for-5 game in the ninth inning with his 17th home run of the season and 29th of his career to rank seventh all-time at WSU, but his effort could not bring the Cougars a victory Friday night as they lost to Stanford 14-6. Washington State's record fell to 15-37 (6-16 in Pac-10) with the loss, while the Cardinal remains in the hunt for a share of the Pac-10 title by running its record to 40-14 (15-7).

WSU trailed early, giving up four runs on two-run blasts by Stanford's Scott Dragicevich and Chris O'Riordan in the second inning, but Cougar third baseman Brent Robertson answered in the bottom of the inning with a double off Stanford starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie before scoring from third on a passed ball to make it a 4-1 game.

The Cardinal scored two more in the third on another two-run home run off Cougar starter Garret Alwert, and it scored three more in the fourth inning for a commanding 9-1 lead. Alwert lasted four innings, giving up nine runs, of which seven were earned, on seven hits and struck out two batters.

WSU made the game a bit closer in the fifth inning as Bailie drove in Evan Hecker with a two-out single to left field in the fifth inning to cut Stanford's lead to seven runs at 9-2. Robertson came around to score as Hecker reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth before Mike Knight hit his second double of the game that plated Hecker and Justin Williams with two outs to put the Cougs within four.

Stanford put the game away in the eighth as they scored five runs off reliever Tyson Thompson. Arik VanZandt hit a three-run dinger and Ryan Garko hit another two-run round-tripper to push the lead to 14-5.
