#21 Arizona Sweeps WSU In Pac-10 Volleyball Opener
September 18, 1998
PULLMAN, Wash -- Arizona, ranked 21st in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll,
extended its undefeated streak to nine matches with a 15-12, 15-7, 15-12
win over Washington State Friday night at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.
This marked WSU's fourth consecutive three-game loss and the 2-4 start is
the worst in Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick's ten years on the Palouse. The
last time WSU lost four consecutive matches was the end of the 1993
conference season when the Cougs finished 16-13 overall but still attained
an NCAA Tournament bid. Fredrick's first two seasons at WSU started with
3-3 records (1989, 1990).
Arizona's Keisha Johnson Demps led all players with 17 kills. Marisa DaLee
added 13 kills and Raelene Elam had 11 kills for the Wildcats. Elam also
had 13 digs and four service aces, both match highs. Allison Napier
blocked five attacks.
WSU was led by the 12 kills of sophomore Colleen Smith (Albuquerque, NM).
Senior Jennifer Stinson (Davenport, Wash.) contributed 10 kills and four
blocks. Senior setter Samantha Spink (Coeur d'Alene, Id.) had 36 assists
while senior Wendy Rouse (Reno, Nev.) had 11 digs.
"We made some changes to the lineup and that should have made a difference
but it obviously didn't," Fredrick said. "They aced us nine times and
that's more points than we scored in the second game. We can't let that
happen and expect to win."
Washington State hosts Arizona State at Beasley Coliseum Sept. 20, for a
Sunday 1 p.m. match.
