Washington Takes 3-2 Win Over WSU Volleyball

October 23, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The visiting Washington Huskies put a damper on an already down Washington State Cougar volleyball team with a 3-2 win Friday night before 1,876 fans in Beasley Coliseum. Washington started the second half of the Pac-10 season with a 3-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-13 win over the Cougs to complete a sweep of WSU this season.

Washington State is now 5-5 in Pac-10, 8-8 overall. Washington moved to 4-6 in conference action, 5-9 overall.

WSU played without the 4.22 kills per game and 1.48 blocks per game of All-Pac-10 middle blocker Jennifer Stinson who dislocated her left ankle in practice Thursday and will be out of action for at least the next three weeks. She was at the match alternating from crutches to a wheel-chair to keep her foot elevated.

Senior Wendy Rouse who moved from right-side hitter to the middle in Stinson's spot had 17 kills and six blocks. Freshman Kristen Johnson (Olympia, Wash.) saw her first playing time since the Cougar Challenge Tournament in early September moving into Rouse's position. Johnson tallied 17 kills and 11 digs. Joy Sperry was the only other Cougar in double-figures with 15 kills and the match-high 22 digs.

Washington was led by the 20 kills and 17 digs of Kristina Laffling. Leslie Tuiasosopo contributed 19 kills and seven blocks. UW's Lisa Underhill also had seven blocks and tagged 12 kills.

The Cougars dominated the first game hitting .324 to UW's .096. Washington started to warm up in the second game coming from 7-10 deficit to tie it up at 12, but still WSU still had the momentum going into break with a 2-0 game lead.

Washington led in the third game from start to finish and kept on rolling with a 5-6 fourth-game win. The Huskies were up 13-7 in the rally-scoring fifth game before WSU mounted a comeback including four straight points when UW was at game-point. A kill from Emily Seacat gave the Huskies a 15-13 win and the match.

"Kristen Johnson did a good job under the circumstances," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said. "She capitalized on their setter not being a great blocker. But our left side is killing us with Sperry hitting .093 and Blackshire hitting .118."

The tape-delayed broadcast of the Husky-Cougar match can be seen on the FOX Sports Northwest system Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m.

Washington State hosts California Friday, Oct. 30 in a 7:30 p.m. match to be broadcast live on FOX Sports Network.
