PULLMAN, Wash. (October 3, 2026) — Washington State football lost to Fresno State 26-6 Saturday night at Gesa Field.
The Cougars’ defense kept Fresno State out of the end zone in the first quarter, stopping their opponent for no gain on third-and-1 at the WSU 5 before Fresno State settled for a 27-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. Wazzu was held scoreless, punted on its first two possessions, and finished the quarter with one first down while trailing 3-0.
WSU got both of its second-quarter scores from Stevens, who made a 32-yard field goal and then hit a 50-yarder as time expired to tie the score at 6-6. Jirah Leaupepetele forced a fumble on fourth down and Terrell recovered at midfield, setting up Stevens’ 32-yard kick that made it 3-3. Fresno State moved back in front with a 22-yard field goal, but the Cougars went 56 yards in the final 1:46 to pull even before halftime.
Wazzu’s defense limited the damage after Pinnick’s fumble at the WSU 24, as Damarjhe Lewis blocked a 33-yard field-goal attempt and Matyus McLain recovered at the WSU 10 with 7:13 left in the third quarter. Earlier, Fresno State drove 56 yards for a touchdown and extra point to make it 13-6, and the Cougars were held scoreless in the quarter. WSU had one first down in the quarter, with Pinnick’s 23-yard completion to Daniel Blood its longest gain, and the quarter ended with Fresno State ahead 13-6.
The Cougars were held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Fresno State turned a Wazzu turnover on downs at the WSU 8 into an 8-yard touchdown, then added a field goal after an interception.
Up next, WSU travels to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State Friday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Jack Stevens converted both field-goal attempts, including a long of 50 yards.
Caden Pinnick completed 21 of 34 passes for 152 yards.
Isaiah Hung led the Cougars with seven tackles.
Khamari Terrell recorded six tackles and recovered a fumble.
