Katy Ryan Records 1,000th Career Kill in Loss to Pepperdine

Pullman, Wash. (October 6, 2024) – Washington State Volleyball lost to Pepperdine in four sets Sunday afternoon, 3-1, while Katy Ryan reached the 1,000 kill mark for her career.

The Cougars (8-5, 3-1 WCC) showed stretches of impressive runs throughout the match, and tallied eight service aces and nine blocks as a team.

Sage Brustad led the offense with 18 kills and 21.5 points, along with three service aces and 13 digs.

Ryan finished with eight kills, her eighth being the 1,000th for her career, and five blocks.

Breccan Scheck also tallied five blocks to go with seven kills.

Italia Bernal had 36 assists, eight digs and two aces, and Emma Barbero finished with 20 digs, two assists and an ace.

Lucie Blažková ended up with five kills and three blocks, and Jaden Walz had 10 digs.

After going down a set and trailing 11-8 in set two, the Cougs turned it on when a Scheck kill jumpstarted a 12-3 run that saw aces from Brustad and Bernal, and kills from Brustad, Blažková and Vrieling that put WSU on top 20-14. Down the stretch, an ace from Vrieling and a pair of Brustad kills made it 24-20 before Ryan sealed the set two win with her third kill of the game, locking the match at 1-1.

Pepperdine took set three to move ahead 2-1, and then moved out to a 7-2 lead early in set four. WSU answered with a 10-1 run with two kills and two aces from Brustad, a Bernal ace, and kills from Ryan, Wojdyla and Scheck to give the Cougs a 12-8 advantage. Pepperdine would come back to take a 15-14 lead in the fourth set, and teams went back-and-forth from there.

Two more kills from Brustad put WSU back ahead 18-17, and then a block assist by Scheck and Brustad, and Ryan's 1,000th kill made it 20-18 in favor of the Cougs. After Pepperdine went back up 22-20, three straight Cougar points including a big block from Ryan and Scheck gave them a late 23-22 lead. Pepperdine finished with three straight points of their own, though, to win the set 25-23, and the match 3-1.
