October 10, 2024 | Volleyball
STOCKTON, Calif. (October 10, 2024) – After falling in set one, Washington State Volleyball roared back to win the next three sets and roll past Pacific, 3-1 Thursday night.
The Cougars (9-5, 4-1 WCC) held Pacific to a .101 hitting percentage on the night, and under .100 for three of the four sets, while out-blocking them at a 16-3 clip.
Katy Ryan paced the offense with 17 kills to go with four blocks.
Lucie Blažková had a strong night with eight kills, eight blocks and an ace.
Sage Brustad finished with five kills, five blocks, three aces and nine digs.
Italia Bernal recorded her team-leading eighth double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs to go with a kill and two blocks.
Emma Barbero tallied 19 digs and five assists.
Weronika Wojdyla added three kills and an ace, and Taryn Vrieling had four kills, an ace and a block.
After Pacific won set one, a kill from Vrieling early in set two put WSU ahead 3-2. A few points later, the Cougs put together a 4-0 spurt with a Ryan kill and Bernal ace to stretch to a 13-9 lead. Then later, a kill and an ace from Vrieling and a Blažková kill made it 20-14 before a pair of Ryan kills sealed the 25-21 set two win.
Two more kills from Ryan and a Brustad ace gave WSU an early 4-1 lead in set three before a pair of Blažková kills helped make it a 10-4 game. After three unanswered from Pacific, kills from Scheck and Brustad kept the Cougs out in front by four, but Pacific wasn't done as they would pull back to within one, 15-14. From there, a Ryan kill and a kill and an ace from Wojdyla stretched the Cougar lead back out to 18-15, and then Blažková put the lead back at four, 20-16. Dow the stretch, another Ryan kill and a block assist from Blažková and Ryan would wrap up the set three win, 25-20.
With momentum favoring WSU, the team rattled off a 7-0 run to open the fourth set with kills from Ryan and a Bernal ace, before kills from Brustad, Blažková and Wojdyla, and a Blažková block extended the lead to 13-5. After another Blažková kill made it 14-7, Pacific inched back to within three, but a kill from Ryan and aces from Bernal and Brustad stretched the lead back out again to 19-13. The Tigers weren't done, though, eventually tying the set at 22-all, but WSU stalled them there as a Bernal block capped three straight Cougar points to win the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
