Cougar Rowing Competes on Both Coasts This Weekend

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's rowing team will split its squad to compete in the Head of the Spokane, Saturday, Oct. 21 outside Spokane, Wash., and in the Head of the Charles, Sunday, Oct. 22, in Cambridge, Mass. WSU will face the top university crews in the country Sunday in Massachusetts, in addition to well-recognized clubs and national teams.
The Cougars hit the water tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in the opening flight at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga University. LMU and Oregon State are also competing in the regatta. WSU will send two eights in the opening flight with Hana Anderson stroking WSU A, coxswained by Vera Lichvarcik. The Cougs' second varsity eight is stroked by Dani Vicinte with Audrey Gulig handling the gunnels.
The second varsity flight of the day is scheduled to launch at 10:45 a.m. with WSU racing two fours and an eight. Lichvarcik will reprise her roll in the WSU A 4+ with half of the varsity eight, while the other half of the boat from the opening flight competes in the second Cougar four. Kat Trubnikov will cox the Cougar eight in Flight No. 2.
In the novice racing shells, one eight will compete in each flight. In Flight No. 1, Madison Cohnheim will lead stroke-seat Grace Grant. The second varsity flight of the day will feature Amy Kovich stroking the novice eight with Ella McCoy in the coxswain's seat.
Beginning Sunday afternoon the Cougars will also be competing on the other side of the country in the historic Head of the Charles regatta. Nearly 800 rowing clubs, ranging from high school and junior crews up through masters division will compete in the three-day regatta, which began Friday morning.
The WSU varsity four is scheduled to race at 10:35 a.m. PT (1:35 p.m. ET) and will race against fellow Division-I programs Boston College, Boston University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Iona, Merrimack, Northeastern, Oklahoma, Penn, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Ella Greenslade will cox the Cougar shell with Makayla Tuley in the four seat.
The women's varsity eight flight is scheduled to begin at 11:32 a.m. PT (2:32 p.m. ET) with Sydney Wick in the stroke seat and Ainsley Tiernan coxswaining. The championship event features all of the universities in the fours flight, in addition to Drexel, Michigan, Princeton, Rhode Island, Stanford, Southern California, Syracuse, and Yale.
The championship eight event will also feature national teams from Denmark, Ukraine, and the United States.
