Cougars Head to Tucson to Face Elite Competition

WSU will face three of the nation’s top-seven teams at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.)

THIS WEEK – With less than a week since its last competition, Washington State men's golf head south to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) host by Arizona, Monday-Tuesday, March 18-19, at Omni Tucson National on the Catalina Course, with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. PDT.  

THE COURSE – The 7,262-yard Catalina Course will play at par 72…the course has hosted over 30 PGA Tour events as well as a 2006 NCAA Regional...with parkland style with eight lakes and 80 bunks, it has been selected as one of Golf Digest's "75 Best Golf Resorts in North America".

THE FIELD – The N.I.T will contain a field of 16 elite teams, including top ranked programs like No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 Oklahoma, and No. 7 USC. Rounding out the field are; host-No. 49 Arizona, Colorado, No. 52 Colorado State, No. 42 Iowa State, New Mexico, North Texas, San Diego, No. 57 San Diego State, No. 32 UNLV, Utah, UTEP, and Wyoming. Some of college golf's elite individual and amateur competitors like Justin Suh (USC), Chun An Yu (ASU), Riley Casey (Oklahoma), and Arizona's Trevor Werbylo, will face off in the two-day tournament.

LAST TIME ON THE GREEN – The Cougars last competed at the Bandon Dunes Championship hosted by Gonzaga at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort at Bandon, Ore., March 10-12…the Cougars moved up two spots on the final day to finish 15th as a team (924, +60)…juniors Nicklaus Chiam and Scott Redelsperger led the Cougars, tying for 55th with after shooting 229 (+13) throughout the tournament…junior Daniel Kolar (+17, 233) tied for 71st. Seniors Grant Cole (+20, 236) and AJ Armstrong (+28, 244) tied for 79th and 103rd respectively…Ryan Maine tied for 79th after shooting a 236 (+20) as an individual.

THE LINEUP – Representing the Cougars in Arizona will be juniors Nicklaus Chiam, Scott Redelsperger and Daniel Kolar and seniors Grant Cole and AJ Armstrong…sophomore Khan Lee will compete as an individual. 

COACHES – Third-year head coach Dustin White continues to lead the Cougars through the second leg of the 2018-19 golf season…White came back to Pullman in 2016 after golfing for the Cougars from 1999-2003 as one of the most decorated Cougars in school history…while at WSU, White earned three All-Pac-10 selections, including a first team selection in 2002…White even holds a school record for the most top-10 finishes (8), which includes a first place finish and national player of the week honors…Assisting White is first-year assistant coach Kevin Tucker, who also golfed for the Cougars from 2006-10…Tucker is another highly regarded Washington State golfer, as he was just the second Cougar to be invited to the NCAA Regional Championship in his junior year, and went back the next year…Tucker returned to the Palouse in 2018 after spending some time on professional golf tours.
