Freshmen Shine at WSU Alumni Meet

Senior Nathan Wadhwani won the men’s race for the second-straight year.

COLFAX, Wash. – Emma Jenkins and Amir Ado each ran freshmen course records in their respective races as the No. 13 Washington State men's cross country team and the WSU women's team hosted the WSU Alumni Meet, Friday at the Colfax Golf Club.

"It was a great opener and I was very impressed by both sides," WSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Wayne Phipps said. "The men's team averaged about five seconds faster than the team that was 14th at nationals two years ago; and Amir Ado and Emma Jenkins both broke their respective freshmen course records."

Senior Nathan Wadhwani won the men's 6000m race for the second-straight season, nearly three seconds off his course-record time (17:30.6), set last season at the WSU Alumni Open, as he came in at 17:33.5. He was followed by his classmate, Paul Ryan (17:37.9) and redshirt freshman Ado with a freshman course record of 17:46.8, nearly matching his second-place time from last season when he ran unattached.

Other top finishes from WSU's men came from senior Chandler Teigen (fourth, 17:47.7), junior Colton Johnsen (fifth, 17:48.2), junior Justin Janke (sixth, 17:52.2) and redshirt sophomore Kennan Schrag (seventh, 17:57.1).

In the women's 4000m, freshman Jenkins took the win with a time of 13:49.5, bettering her teammate, Kiyena Beatty's freshman record set last season (14:15.4). Jenkins was followed by Cougar alum, Devon Bortfeld, who served as team captain last season as a senior. Bortfeld finished in a time of 13:52.7. Junior Desi Stinger finished third with a time of 14:06.2. Other top WSU finishers included sophomore Pia Richards (sixth, 14:21.2), sophomore Samantha King-Shaw (seventh, 14:23.1), junior Marie Gaudin (eighth, 14:26.5) and junior Melissa Hruska (ninth, 14:38.7).

This course is the site of the 2019 NCAA West Region Cross Country Championships and the 2015 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships.

Cougar cross country has a week off from competition before hosting the Cougar Classic, Friday, Sept. 14 with the men's race beginning at 5:15 p.m.
