The Cougs used a hot second round to move into second at their own Itani Quality Homes Collegiate.
PULLMAN, Wash. - After a quiet opening 18 holes around the Palouse Ridge Golf Course, the Washington State men's golf team caught fire in round two to finish the opening day of their own Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in second place Monday. Carding a team score of 271 (-13) in the afternoon, the Cougs shot up the leaderboard to finish the day at 15-under with a combined score of 553. For WSU, the only thing keeping the day from finishing exactly to plan was the outrageous play of Boise State which one-upped WSU with a second round 265 (-19) to claim the overall lead at 546 (-22).
Pacing the Cougs around their home course was junior Grant Cole who carded a 36-hole score of 135 (-5) to place himself into a tie for fifth overall after day one. Cole sits just three strokes back of South Dakota's Thomas Vining who used a second round 64 to move into the clubhouse at -10 with 18 holes to play Tuesday.
Alongside of Cole, WSU has a second Coug within reach of the individual lead thanks to Nicklaus Chiam dominating the course in round two with a tournament low -9, 62 to finish tied with Cole at -7 overall. The sophomore is playing his first tournament of the season unattached from the Cougs' scoring five as WSU has all 10 players in the tournament with half of the roster taking on the course as individual competitors.
A trio of Cougs ended the day just outside of the tournament's top-10 as Daniel Kolar, AJ Armstrong, and Derek Bayley all finished the first 36-holes in a tie for 13th at two-under par.
The Cougs will look to reel in the Broncos on the final day of play at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate Tuesday, Sept. 12. The field tees off at 8:30 am from around the course in a shotgun start with the Cougs heading off of the first four holes alongside of Boise State and Long Beach State.
