The No. 14 Cougars will compete with 21 teams across the two-day regatta.
Cougar Rowing Back In Action at Clemson Invite: No. 14 Washington State rowing returns to competition at the fifth-annual Clemson Invitational, Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 on Lake Hartwell at Clemson, S.C.
The 2017 Clemson Invitational: The fifth-annual Clemson Invitational features a field of 21 teams..the schools are seeded into heats across two sessions, Saturday, and those performances will decide placement for final heats, Sunday...racing will take place over a 2,000-meter course at Lake Hartwell...the Cougars' varsity eight will kick off racing Saturday in the Invitational's opening heat at 5:30 a.m. PT/8:30 a.m. ET....the Invitational field includes eight other ranked crews, including No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Texas, and No. 10 Virginia in the top-10...three of the participating schools are receiving votes in this week's USRowing/CRCA top-20 poll...official results will be tweeted at @ClemsonRowing as they become available...a live stream video of the event will also be available, closer to Saturday's race at wsucougars.com.
Saturday WSU Lane Assignments/Seeding:
Last Season at the Clemson Invitational: Then-No. 14 WSU saw its third varsity eight win its heat during the first session of the 2016 Clemson Invitational, and the Cougars' other three boats each placed second to No. 3 Virginia in the first session, last season at Lake Hartwell...the Cougar varsity and second varsity eights each placed second behind No. 10 Michigan in the second session, while the varsity four came in third behind No. 10 Michigan and Oklahoma, and the third varsity eight raced to a second-place finish with No. 3 Virginia...at the final session, Sunday, the Cougar varsity eight was second to No. 4 Ohio State....the second varsity eight also came in second to the fourth-ranked Buckeyes...WSU's third varsity eight was third in a heat that included No. 8 Texas and No. 20 Louisville...the varsity four was fifth in a race that included No. 20 Louisville and No. 4 Ohio State...on the weekend, the Cougars claimed multiple victories against six other ranked crews including No. 4 Ohio State, No. 10 Michigan, No. 13 Indiana, No. 17 Harvard, No. 19 Syracuse, and No. 20 Louisville.
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere On The Clemson Invitational: "The Clemson Invitational is turning out to be one of the biggest events in all of college rowing. There are 21 teams coming, which is one short of the number of teams that get invited to the NCAAs. They've got a new format this year, and are seeding one through 21. We're going to get to see a wide variety of opponents on Saturday, and then based on our results we're going to be seeded into first, second, or third finals. It will be great to see if we can go squeeze some competition and see where we're at right now."
Cougars Ranked 14th in USRowing/CRCA Preseason Poll: WSU is ranked 14th in the nation in this week's USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Coaches Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells, released April 18... Washington State's No. 14 ranking keeps it in the nation's top-15 for a 24th-consecutive week dating back to March 25, 2015...overall, WSU is ranked in the top-20 for the 92nd-consecutive week, dating back to June 11, 2008...five of the seven Pac-12's women's rowing teams are ranked in the top-20 poll: Washington-first, California-second, Stanford-eighth, USC-13th, and WSU-14…UCLA is receiving votes.
Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere is in her 15th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 10 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Josh Adam, assistant/novice coach Karl Huhta and assistant coach Liz England...Adam is in his seventh year after coaching his prior two years at Indiana...Huhta is in his third year with the Cougars and second as the novice coach...England is entering her first season, after rowing for LaRiviere from 2010-12.
Next for the Cougars: The Cougars will return home Saturday, April 29 against rival Washington on the Snake River at Wawawai Landing...the regatta will mark the final tune up for WSU before the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, May 14.
