August 13, 2016 | Rowing
Lisa Roman made her first Olympics appearance.
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State rower Lisa Roman (2011-13) finished fifth as a member of the Canadian women's eight crew in the event final at the 2016 Olympic Games Saturday.Â
The Canadian eight (Cristy Nurse, Lisa Roman, Antje von Seydlitz-Kurzback, Christine Roper, Lauren Wilkinson, Susanne Grainger, Natalie Mastracci, Caileigh Filmer and Lesley Thompson-Willie), racing out of lane five, jumped out to an early lead in the race, leading at both the 500 meter and 1,000 meter marks. The United States started to catch up to the Canadian, catching them prior to the 1,5000-mark as Canada held a slight lead over Great Britain and held second at that point.Â
Late charges by Romania and New Zealand pulled the two boats ahead of Canada. The USA won the gold with a time of 6:01.49, followed by Great Britain in second for the silver at 6:03.98. Romania was third (6:04.10) and picked up the bronze, followed by New Zealand in fourth (6:05.48). Canada clocked a time of 6:06.04, finishing just ahead of the Netherlands.Â
