Lisa Roman and Nicole Hare to Represent Canada at Olympics
June 28, 2016 | Rowing
The two Cougars are two of just 12 open weight women selected.
Washington State rowing rising-senior, Nicole Hare, and former Cougar rower, Lisa Roman, have been chosen to represent Canada at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from August 5-21, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced Tuesday. Just 12 open weight women were chosen to compete in a total of three events; single sculls, pair and eight.
"What a great day for the Cougs," WSU head rowing coach, Jane LaRiviere, who coached both Hare and Roman three years each at Washington State, said. "To have two Cougars make Canada's Olympic rowing team is just outstanding. Lisa Roman (class of 2012) and current-Coug Nicole Hare are talented and dedicated athletes who have worked hard to earn the right and privilege to call themselves Olympians. The whole Cougar Nation will be watching and cheering them on!"
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Hare will compete as a member of the women's pair crew along with Jennifer Martins (Toronto, Ontario). A native of Langley, British Columbia, Roman will compete as a member of the women's eight crew along with Cristy Nurse (Georgetown, Ontario), Natalie Mastracci (Thorold, Onatario), Susanne Grainger (London, Ontario), Lauren Wilkinson (North Vancouver, British Columbia), Caileigh Filmer (Victoria, British Columbia), Christine Roper (Bay, Jamaica), Antje von Seydlitz-Kurzbach (Smithers, British Columbia) and Lesley Thompson-Willie (London, Ontario).Â
Hare is a three-year member of the WSU rowing team and has competed with the varsity eight crew her entire collegiate career, beginning with the 2013 season. She took a year off from college during the 2016 season to train and compete for a spot on the Olympic team, and will return to WSU in the fall to complete her eligibility in 2017. Hare led the varsity eight boat to three-straight NCAA Championships, including a ninth-place boat finish and eight-place team finish in 2015. She was chosen as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association (CRCA) Second Team All-America selection in May of 2015. Hare has previously competed with the Canadian Under-23 team, as well as at the Canadian Rowing Championships. Â
A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). She is a two-time all-conference honoree, and in 2012 was named to the CRCA All-West Region First Team and the Pocock All-America Second Team. This year Roman was named to the Pac-12's All-Century Women's Rowing Team. Roman has been competing with the Canadian National Team since 2014. Prior to that she rowed for Canada's Western Rowing Club at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2011 and in the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in 2011.Â
Of the 26 total athletes, male and female, there are 10 returning Olympians, including six who stood on the podium at London 2012. Leading the way is Lesley Thompson-Willie, the coxswain of the women's eight, who will be competing in her eighth Olympic Games, tying the all-time women's record for any sport. Â
Canada qualified six boats last September at the World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France. The men's quadruple sculls qualified as the seventh and final boat at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland in May.
Canada's final pre-Olympic competition also took place in Lucerne at the second World Rowing Cup where the lightweight women's double sculls crew of Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee won a gold medal. Training camps for the men's and women's rowing teams will be held in July in Guelph and London, Ontario respectively.
The rowing competition will take place at the Lagoa Stadium, August 6-14, with eight men's events and six women's events.
At Rio 2016, Canada expects to field a team of more than 315 athletes.
