Trek Stemp Drafted In 29th Round by Tampa Bay

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State infielder Trek Stemp was selected in the 29th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in the Major League Baseball Draft Saturday.
Stemp, a redshirt-junior, earned All-Pac-12 Conference honors after finishing the regular season fifth in the conference with a .355 batting average and tied for second with 12 stolen bases. The Kennewick, Wash. native posted team-highs of 65 hits and 32 runs scored despite missing the final nine games with an injury. Stemp also led the Cougars with 17 multiple-hit games including a three 4-hit games and recorded three different hitting streaks of 10+ games throughout the season. In Pac-12 play, he hit .324 and tied for second with six stolen bases while fielding at a .982 clip in 25 games. Stemp earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors after hitting .692 with four runs scored in the series win over No. 10 Oregon State, recording multiple hits in all three games including four in the series-finale.
Stemp owns a .312 career batting average in 130 games with Cougars, recording 149 hits, 19 doubles, 79 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and 43 career multiple-hit games in his three seasons.
Stemp was taken as No. 870 overall pick and the 14th selection of the round. Earlier Saturday, Cougar pitcher Ian Hamilton was drafted in the 11th round by the Chicago White Sox and incoming freshman pitcher Jake Polancic was also drafted in the 11th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Current WSU lefthander Layne Bruner was taken in the 18th round by the Baltimore Orioles and incoming junior college signee Nate Easley was taken in the 23rda round by the San Diego Padres.
