Rains Drench Cougars at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. -- With a temperature drop of about 30 degrees and steady downpours of rain all day, the Washington State track and field teams competed in depleted fields in Thursday's events at the 48th Mt. San Antonio College Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Drew Ulrick (junior, Spokane, Wash.) won the men's University/Open discus with an NCAA Regional Qualifying throw of 177-feet, 3 inches (54.04m), although he has a better mark established this season, while freshman Matt Lamb (Emmett, Idaho) finished fifth with a toss of 142-2 (43.33m). The event which originally boasted 29 competitors ended up being a six throwers with three from Palouse-area universities.

John Cassleman (junior, Pullman) ran an NCAA RQ time in the 400m hurdles of 52.24 seconds for third place in the Olympic Development University/Open race.

Haley Paul (sophomore, Phoenix) also reached an NCAA RQ time with her 4:26.79 for 13th in the Olympic Development University/Open 1500m.

In women's University/Open results, McKenzie Burgess Garberg threw the discus 154-0 (46.95m) for second place and threw the hammer 170-3 (51.90m) for seventh. Lorraine King (freshman, Fontana, Calif.) ran a PR in the 400m hurdles of 1:03.99 (12th) and La Shawnda Porter (sophomore, Renton, Wash.) ran a 100m dash PR time of 12.00w for fifth and finished fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.09. McKinnon Hanson (sophomore, La Push, Wash.) high jumped 5-3 (1.60m (tied 10th) and Catie Schuetzle long jumped 18-6 1/2 (5.60m) for fifth place.

In the men's University/Open 100m dash, Jaycee Robertson (junior, Spanaway, Wash.) ran a time of 11.00 (16th) while Justin Woods (freshman, Buena Vista, Calif.) ran a time of 11.20 (24th) and his brother, junior Brian Woods, clocked in with a time of 11.37 (28th). Robert Williams (freshman, Riverside, Calif.) finished second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.85 while senior Josh Leyk (Veradale, Wash.) finished 10th with a time of 15.81.

While other Cougs competed Friday, results were not available at press time. The Mt. San Antonio College Relays continue through Saturday at Walnut, Calif.
