Cougar Tennis Loses In San Diego

March 8, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Calif -- The No. 41 Washington State tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the No. 29 San Diego State Aztecs, Saturday.

The Cougars (6-4) lost the doubles point and could only manage wins in three of six singles matches against the Aztecs (6-3). At No. 2 doubles, WSU's Orsolya Sallai and Annabel Stefanchuk beat SDSU's Katja Karrento and Katalina Romero, 9-8.

WSU sophomore Chris Martinez won her 15th match of the season at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 7-6 victory over Aztec Patricia Graf. Fellow Cougar sophomores Nora Gaal (No. 4 singles) and Zsofi Fodor (No. 6 singles) won their respective singles matches as well.

"We played good singles today," said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce. "Our No. 2 doubles team is really coming together. It's a disappointing loss. We're looking for an upset of a top-ranked team to give us a push, but it just didn't happen today."

The Cougars will stay in sunny Southern California for another match this weekend. WSU takes on the University of San Diego Sunday March 9 at noon.
