SEATTLE, Wash. (Nov. 7, 2025) – Washington State concluded play Friday dropping three close matches during the second day at the 2025 ITA Sectional Championships, played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the Washington campus.

Maxine Murphy faced Washington's Erika Matsuda in the Round of the 16 singles draw and jumped out quickly, winning the first set 6-2. In the second, Matsuda quickly broke Murphy and turned the page, winning 6-2 and forcing a decisive third set. There, Matsuda grabbed two early breaks and rode them to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Eva Alvarez Sande, also in the Round of 16, battled No. 5-seed Berta Passola Folch in two tough sets before the Cal Bear pulled out a 6-3, 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.

In a consolation round doubles match, Alvarez Sande and Murphy certainly had chances early, up 4-1 and holding two break points against UCLA's Ahmani Guichard and Kate Fakih in the first set. The Bruins' pair rallied to win five-straight games and take the first set 6-4. In the second, the set went back-and-forth before UCLA escaped in the tiebreaker, winning 6-4, 7-6 (4).

The 2025 ITA Sectional Championships consists of a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles draw. From those draws, six singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists, two quarterfinal playoff winners). Meanwhile, three doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship (champion, finalist, third place).
