TEMPE, Ariz. -- WSU third baseman Brent Robertson scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning against Arizona State as the Cougs upset the nationally-ranked Sun Devils 2-1 at Packard Stadium Thursday night. Robertson scored from second base due to a fielding error by ASU second baseman Brooks Conrad in an attempt to retire Cougar Van Delos Santos with two outs in the top half of the ninth. WSU improves to 13-22 (5-5 in Pac-10) while the Sun Devils dropped to 22-13-1 (5-8).
Cougar starter Justin Cayteno pitched superb baseball through seven and one-third innings as he surrendered one run in the first inning, but shut down the Sun Devil offense before he was relieved by Donny Davis in the eighth inning. Cayetano struck out two batters with one walk while giving up five hits. Davis got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retired the side in the ninth to pick up his third victory of the year.
Down a run in the sixth inning, shortstop Bookie Gates scored the tying run after singling to lead off the inning, then stole second two batters later before a Brent Robertson single to right field sent Gates across the plate.
The Cougars had a couple of chances to take the lead in the eighth inning, but Stefan Bailie was tagged out at home trying to score from third on a fielder's choice, and Evan Hecker was gunned down at the plate to end the inning.
The next game for WSU is Friday night, April 13, against the ASU Sun Devils at Packard Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
