Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University sophomore LaToya Harris tallied 27 kills and 19 digs to lead the 2000 Cougar volleyball squad, but the youngsters could only tie the WSU volleyball stars of the past in the first-ever Alumnae Match Friday night before a crowd of 1,243 fans at Beasley Coliseum.

The Alumnae, coached by former All-American and professional volleyball player, Sarah Silvernail, not playing because of elbow surgery this summer, took the first game 18-16. The Cougar undergrads came back to claim game two 15-6.

The final two games had identical scores with the Alums winning game three 15-13 and the Y2Cougars rallying to take game four 15-13. At the conclusion of game four and after evaluating the youthful yet somewhat pooped Alum team, head coach Cindy Fredrick declared the match over with a tie. The prospect of a rally-scoring fifth game was not appealing to anyone on the court or in the stands due to the stifling heat at Beasley.

Double-figure kills for the Cougs were tallied by Adrian Hankoff (17), Trina Kightlinger (14) and Holly Harris (10). Junior transfer setter Kali Surplus added 57 assists and 15 digs. Kortney Jamtaas contributed 11 digs.

The Alum squad out-blocked the Cougars 7 to 5, but the current WSU team out-hit the past players .193 to .179.

Fredrick played all 12 of her current squad - only red-shirting freshman, Brittney Diaz, did not see action. Silvernail and fellow coaches Amanda McDonald, Melissa Merkley and Krista Beightol used some platoon subbing to get the 11 returning Cougars into action.

The Alumnae roster included Kelly Hankins Wilson, Elis Arias, Keren Oigman, Shannon Wyckoff Hunt, Samantha Spink, Jennifer Stinson, Wendy Rouse Carney, Lucie Vratnickova, Stephanie Papke, Kim Kleven and Darci Wellsandt.

WSU opens the 2000 competitive season hosting the Les Schwab Cougar Challenge, Sept. 1-2, at Beasley Coliseum.
